Having spent the last few years splitting his time between producing for TV and fewer movies, veteran Independence Day (1996) writer and producer Dean Devlin is back with Geostorm.
The movie, which Devlin is using as his directorial debut and co-wrote with Paul Guyot (Leverage), takes place in a near future world where climate chaos has forced the world's leaders to band together and create a high-tech network of satellites that keeps everything in check. But – because there wouldn't be much of a story without it – something has now gone badly wrong, and the system designed to rein in bad weather is unleashing it upon the planet. Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen) stars as scientist Jake, who along with brother Max (Jim Sturgess) have to try to solve the problem.
With Abbie Cornish (Limitless), Ed Harris (Apollo 13), Daniel Wu (Warcraft: The Beginning), Andy Garcia (Oceans 13) and Alexandra Maria Lara (Rush) also in the cast, Geostorm will arrive in the UK on 20 October.
