We have known for a while that Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) will be exploring ancient ruins as the new Lara Croft in the latest movie adaptation of the Tomb Raider games. But now news arrives via Variety that she will face some crafty opposition in the shape of Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight).
Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is in the director's chair for the film, which will focus on the early adventures of the character twice brought to the screen by Angelina Jolie. The plot is being kept in a safe, though Geneva Robertson-Dworet has been developing the script, and it will apparently feature Lara trying to clear her father's name.
Variety's story on Goggins' casting doesn't mention exactly how he will factor into the story, beyond being the antagonist. He has been carving out some solid roles in the last few years, including on TV for The Shield and Justified and Vice Principals. On film, he has been seen in movies such as Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained (2012) and The Hateful Eight (2015).
The new Tomb Raider is taking aim at a 16 March 2018 release.
