Put together by Margot Robbie (The Wolf Of Wall Street) as one of the projects from her production company, Tonya Harding pic I, Tonya is currently shooting with Craig Gillespie (Lars And The Real Girl) in the director's seat. And they have found someone for a key role in the story, with news arriving via Deadline that Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War) will be joining them as Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly.
Initially viewed as a plucky underdog who had escaped grinding poverty to rise to the top of the figure skating world, Harding famously attacked her closest rival at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. Her husband of the time, Gillooly hired Shane Stant to attack Nancy Kerrigan with a police baton, leaving her with a badly bruised, but not broken leg.
Riffing on baseball’s 'Shot Heard Around The World', tabloid types immediately dubbed the incident 'The Whack Heard Round The World'. It had all been captured on camera, leaving Harding disgraced and eventually banned from the sport. Kerrigan recovered in time to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics. Gillooly got two years in prison for racketeering, as he was judged to be the driving force in the hobbling plot.
The script comes from writer Steven Rogers (P.S. I Love You), and if they don't have him visit the set for Stan to go full Bucky Barnes, then they are clearly missing a trick. The actor will next be seen in Steven Soderbergh's (Ocean's Eleven) Logan Lucky, which will be out next year.
