"I did not start this war."

20th Century Fox have recently released their first trailer and one sheet for Matt Reeves' Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014) follow-up, War For The Planet Of The Apes.

War For The Planet Of The Apes finds Caesar and his simian tribe forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel (Woody Harrelson) are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

It certainly looks as if we are in for an action and effects spectacle on a scale we have not yet seen in the Apes movies. But you can be sure there will be weight to it – that downbeat philosophical, moral and metaphorical thread unique to the franchise remains very much in place. There will be other blockbusters next summer, but you can be sure there won't be another one quite like this.

With Steve Zahn (Dallas Buyers Club) also in the cast, alongside returning ape performers Judy Greer, Karin Konoval and Terry Notary (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes), will arrive in cinemas 14 July.
