Filming begins on Han Solo Star Wars standalone

After months of build-up, the usual trickle feed of casting news and plenty of jokes from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie), the Han Solo Star Wars Story film is now shooting at Pinewood Studios. To celebrate, Miller has posted an image of the first slate via his Twitter feed.

The usual blast shields are down on most of the information on this one, but we do know that Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) is playing the younger Han Solo, with Donald Glover (Community) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games) as Han's mentor figure and Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones) in a role that no one is talking about yet.

The script comes from Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) co-writer and Star Wars stalwart Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon, and we are expecting big things from the directing duo, who have a habit of taking unlikely ideas and making winning movies. And as for that working title? Red Cup is a reference to the Solo brand cups usually spotted at parties.

In related news, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson (Looper) is also feeling jocular, tweeting out a link to a song from John Darnielle Of The Mountain Goats, which was spawned from them joking around. Suffice to say The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All The Other Jedi And Eats Their Bones probably doesn't give a clue to any of the actual story for the new episodic entry, but it is certainly fun, and more entertaining than Jedi Rocks.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on 15 December this year. The still untitled Han Solo film will be with us on 25 May next year.
