"And the BAFTA goes to..."

La La Land toe tapped its way to success at the 70th annual British Academy Film Awards last night. Damien Chazelle's all-singing, all-dancing musical won five awards at the annual event, including Best Film, Best Director for Chazelle, and Best Actress for Emma Stone.

In a ceremony which featured an spectacular opening performance by the Cirque du Soleil, Casey Affleck picked up a gong for Best Actor in Manchester By The Sea, bucking the trend set by Denzel Washington at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and potentially boosting his hopes for an Oscar.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, Oscar front runner Mahershala Ali could not beat the home advantage of Dev Patel, who took home the gong for his work in Lion, while Viola Davis – as expected – won Best Supporting Actress for Fences, dedicating her award to "the people who did not make it into the history books, but they had a story and those stories deserved to be told, because they lived."

Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake took home the award for Best British Film. In a fiery acceptance speech, Loach thanked BAFTA for "endorsing the truth of that this film says, which is that hundreds of thousands of people – the vulnerable and the poorest people – are treated by the this government with a callousness and brutality that is disgraceful."

Elsewhere, the theme of the evening seemed to be the sheer variety of winners, with prizes shared widely across the categories. There were surprise wins for outsider films like Kubo And The Two Strings, which picked up Best Animated Film despite stiff competition from Walt Disney Feature Animation, and Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, which earned a single award for Best Production Design. Elsewhere, Tom Holland picked up an EE Rising Star award for his memorable appearance in Captain America: Civil War. And the legendary Mel Brooks was the recipient of a BAFTA Fellowship for his contributions to comedy across six decades.
