Close to starting production on A Wrinkle In Time for Walt Disney Pictures, director Ava DuVernay (Selma) continues to find interesting people for the cast. News arrives via The Hollywood Reporter that Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) is in talks to play a character named Happy Medium, alongside further new recruits Levi Miller (Pan), Bellamy Young (Scandal), Rowan Blanchard (Girl Meets World) and newcomer Deric McCabe as announced via the director's own Twitter feed.
A Wrinkle In Time has Jennifer Lee (Frozen) adapting Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 children's tale, the start of her Time Quartet series of novels. The story follows the Murray family – especially teenager Meg (Storm Reid) and her genius 5-year-old brother Charles Wallace, and Meg's classmate Calvin O'Keefe. Their scientist father has gone missing, but after the visit of a mysterious woman called Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), they learn that their father's research may have been more successful than they guessed and that he may have travelled in space and time. The kids end up following his footsteps to a planet called Camazotz, ruled by a giant evil brain called The Black Thing.
Happy Medium, by the way, is able to see different times and places, which would certainly come in handy on this particular quest. Galifianakis will be joining a cast that already also includes Oprah Winfrey (Selma), Mindy Kaling (The Office), Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle).
Galifianakis will be heard on screens next month as the voice of The Joker in The Lego Batman Movie, due out on 10 February. A Wrinkle In Time, meanwhile, should arrive in cinemas in 2018.
