Tom Ford's long awaited follow-up to A Single Man (2009) finds Amy Adams as a successful Los Angeles art gallery who is shaken when she receives an unpublished manuscript by her former husband (Jake Gyllenhaa), who she has not seen in years. Reading it, she finds a story of vengeance and gangs set against an arid West Texas landscape.
This tale we see visualised with a dad (also Jake Gyllenhaal), his wife (Isla Fisher) and daughter (Ellie Bamber) accosted by a gang led by Ray (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Things, it is safe to say, turn sour fast, even with Michael Shannon's (The Iceman) cop circling. Back in the film's reality, Adam's Susan muses anxiously over whether this story contains a hidden threat from her ex.
Ford's film has already screened at Toronto International Film Festival, where the outrageously talented designer and director's sophomore efforts played to rave reviews.
Nocturnal Animals is out in cinemas now.
