First look behind the scenes of Transformers: The Last Knight arrives online

Love him or hate him, Michael Bay is constantly looking to up the wow factor in his blockbusters by finding that sweet spot between practical effects and digital effects work. When it lands – as with the skydiving sequence in Transformers: Dark Of The Moon (2011) – it can be breathtaking. As this video from the set shows, Transformers: The Last Knight will be attempting similar stunts the old fashioned way.

The footage shows Bay putting Laura Haddock (Da Vinci's Demons) and Mark Wahlberg through their paces on a giant rig. Reminiscent of the zero-gravity gimbal used in Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010), the set-up is referred to as the 'room roll'. That giant blade looks likely to end up on the end of some kind of nefarious robot.

As for the movie itself, it has recently wrapped its UK location work – including a surprise Nazification of Winston Churchill's ancestral home that scored it a few (probably not wholly unwelcome) headlines – and is heading back to the US for the Chicago leg of the shoot.

The time-travelling storyline remains veiled in secrecy, though we do know that Transformers: The Last Knight will see Haddock, Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Anthony Hopkins (Hitchcock) join Wahlberg's Cade Yeager and franchise mainstays Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson. Bay has also recently added Liam Garrigan (Once Upon A Time) to its ranks as King Arthur.

With Bay back in the driving seat, the carnage will this time be written by three scriptwriters entirely new to the franchise – Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man), and Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down).

Transformers: The Last Knight will explode into cinemas on 23 June 2017.
