It is not often you find Deer Hunter (1978) co-stars Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken sharing the screen together, so you might imagine it is for a gritty new drama. Unfortunately that won't be the case, as news arrives via Deadline that they are set for a new comedy called The War On Grandpa.
The film has Matt Ember, Tom Astle (Get Smart), Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse (Parental Guidance) adapting Robert Kimmel Smith's novel, which finds a boy named Peter (Max Jenkins) who is torn between his affection for his grandfather and his cherished bedroom. When his grandmother dies, grandpa moves in and, thanks to his dodgy leg, he can't live in the attic bedroom. So you can figure out what happens next... The boy is swiftly shifted upstairs, but starts a Home Alone (1990) style prank war to reclaim his territory, only to discover that the old codger is pretty adept at the tricks himself.
Tim Hill (Hop) is the director marshaling the madness, while Walken will be the grandfather's best friend and Eugene Levy is also aboard in an unspecified role. We certainly don't expect the same level of Academy Award® success this time around. The movie hits US screens on 21 April next year but has yet to secure a UK release date.
