Boyd Holbrook's villain revealed as Donald Pierce

The haul of new information and imagery for the latest Wolverine solo outing – which we now know to be titled Logan – is building by the day. Director James Mangold (The Wolverine) and his team have been adding cryptic pictures to the movie's Instagram account, with the latest revealing that Boyd Holbrook's (Gone Girl) villain in the film is Donald Pierce.

In the Marvel comics where he has cropped up in X-Men and other stories, Pierce is a cyborg with ties to The Hellfire Club. He is also known for creating the cybernetic army known as the Reavers. While there is every chance that elements of his backstory will be shifted and twisted for the movie, it is at least more of a clue as to what, or who might be causing problems for Hugh Jackman's main man.

Other images have been a little less information packed, but no less effective, including the gruesome remains of what happens when someone – we assume – brings a gun to an Adamantium claw fight.

And one other picture is more moody than offering much of a clue.

Jackman is set to appear for the very last time as arguably the most iconic member of the X-Men, so we are expecting big things from his swan song in the role. The new movie, written by David James Kelly, is being kept mostly quiet, though most reports have pegged a futuristic Old Man Logan inspiration.

Patrick Stewart is returning as the older Professor Xavier, Richard E. Grant (Dom Hemingway) plays a mad scientist and Stephen Merchant (I Give It A Year), Eriq La Salle (ER), Elise Neal (Hustle & Flow) and Elizabeth Rodriguez (Fear The Walking Dead) are also on board.

Logan is set to arrive in UK cinemas on 2 March next year.
