Anthony Mackie and Margaret Qualley set for science fiction drama IO

Indie science fiction thriller IO has recently picked up the services of a solid cast and a distribution deal with Netflix. News arrives via Variety that Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) and Danny Huston (Children Of Men) have all joined the dystopian movie.

IO, which has Jonathan Helpert (House Of Time) directing a script developed at the Sundance Institute Writer's Lab by Charles Spano (Embers), Clay Jeter and Will Basanta (Jess + Moss), is set on an Earth that has been all but abandoned after catastrophic climate change has wrought havoc across the world. Qualley will be Sam Walden, one of the last surviving people on the planet, who is racing to find a cure for her stricken home world before the last shuttle leaving for a distant human colony takes off and she is left stranded.

Mackie is aboard to play Micah, a mysterious refugee heading for the shuttle who leads Sam to question whether she can truly help the poisoned planet. Variety's report offered no details on Huston's role. The cameras are currently rolling in France.

Qualley, most recently seen in The Nice Guys, is part of the cast of manga adaptation Death Note. Mackie has worked on Kathryn Bigelow's (The Hurt Locker) untitled Detroit riots drama and crime thriller Wetlands. Huston, meanwhile, will be seen in Wonder Woman, which is out on 2 June next year.
