The cast for Pacific Rim 2 is slowly taking shape, with John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Scott Eastwood (Fury) and Cailee Spaeny (Counting To 1000) already on board. Now, following the recent announcement that Chinese actress Jing Tian (Special ID) will be heading into the Drift for the Pacific Rim (2013) sequel, news arrives via Variety that Levi Meaden will be joining the giant Kaiju battling newbies.
Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil) is directing this one, stepping in for Guillermo del Toro, who will produce so he can concentrate on other projects. The film, often known as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, is still largely wrapped in secrecy, though you can expect more of the giant robots versus Kaiju action we all enjoyed last time around. We don't yet know who either Eastwood or Spaeny will be playing in the movie, though Boyega (who is also a producer on the film) is the son of the late Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba).
It remains to be seen whether this second trip to the Rim can improve on the original's faltering US box office, which was boosted by solid returns in China and went on to gross more than $410 million worldwide.
Working mainly in television since 2009, Meaden has popped up in The Killing (2014), iZombie (2015) and Olympus (2015), before making a mark as Matt Copeland in the apocalyptic Aftermath.
Pacific Rim 2 is due to arrive in February 2018.
