The cast for Pacific Rim 2 is slowly taking shape, with John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Scott Eastwood (Fury) and Cailee Spaeny (Counting To 1000) announced as the three newbies ready to enter the Drift. Now news arrives via The Hollywood Reporter that Chinese actress Jing Tian (Special ID) is set to join them
Tian has yet to make her English language debut – she will feature alongside Matt Damon (The Martian) in The Great Wall before Kong: Skull Island – but has signed on the dotted line to take an as yet unnamed role in the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's larger than life 2013 adventure.
Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil) is directing this one, stepping in for Guillermo del Toro, who will produce so he can concentrate on other projects. The film, often known as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, is still largely wrapped in secrecy, though you can expect more of the giant robots versus Kaiju action we all enjoyed last time around. We don't yet know who either Eastwood or Spaeny will be playing in the movie, though Boyega (who is also a producer on the film) is the son of the late Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba).
It remains to be seen whether this second trip to the Rim can improve on the original's faltering US box office, which was boosted by solid returns in China and went on to gross more than $410 million worldwide.
Pacific Rim 2 is due to arrive in February 2018.
