Recently in the news as the man set to remake Suspiria (1977), Luca Guadagnino's latest film A Bigger Splash is, of sorts, a remake of Jacques Deray's La Piscine (1969), telling a similar tale of simmering sexual jealousy. Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive) plays a rock star, recovering on holiday from an operation on her vocal cords with her filmmaker fling Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust And Bone). But their peace is interrupted when her former producer and lover (Ralph Fiennes) shows up with his daughter (Dakota Johnson). Soon old passions and tensions are simmering, everyone is tempted by something forbidden and trouble is brewing as the swimming pool waters become choppier.
A Bigger Splash played at the BFI London Film Festival film festival last October, and is out on general release in the UK on 12 February.
