Katherine Waterston set for Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott's last update on his Prometheus (2012) follow-up Alien: Covenant contained the surprising news that, while Noomi Rapace is set to show up again as plucky scientist Elizabeth Shaw, she will only get a "minor part" this time, rather than the starring role. Now word arrives via Deadline that Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) has been cast in what sounds like the lead.

Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) had previously been linked to the character – possibly named Daniels – but Waterston is now locked in. She was last seen in Boyle's Steve Jobs alongside Michael Fassbender, who is also set to reprise his role as android David in Alien: Covenant.

Scott has also recently confirmed that, following the curveball of Prometheus, Alien: Convenant will be a full-on Alien movie. "There was always this discussion:" he says. "Is Alien, the character, the beast, played out or not?" Apparently not, since this time "We'll have them all: egg, face-hugger, chest-burster, then the big boy."

Alien: Covenant is set to start shooting in March for a 2017 release.

Waterston, meanwhile, will next be seen in Harry Potter veteran David Yates' Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, which is set to arrive in cinemas 18 November.
