Gillian Anderson set for Sam Fell's Croak

Paranormal (2012) director Sam Fell certainly knows a thing or two about spooky stories. And he is sticking with tales of the other side for his next film, but switching to live action. Now news arrives via The Hollywood Reporter that Fell has Asa Butterfield (Hugo), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Jermaine Clement (What We Do In Th Shadows) and Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games) set to star in Croak.

Written by Lucy Moore, and called Teen Reaper earlier in its development, the plot finds Butterfield as a young Grim Reaper straddling the worlds of the living and the dead as he shepherds souls on to the afterlife. Not much else is known about the film, as it is being kept mostly under wraps, but Fell and his producers took the project to this month's American Film Market to drum up distribution business. So we should expect more news in the coming weeks.

Butterfield is inheriting the role from Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In), who voiced the lead in Paranorman, and who we can only assume has dropped out for scheduling reasons.

Anderson, last seen in Robot Overlords (2012), will be back in her iconic role as Scully for the X-Files revival due on US TV screens in January. She is also at work on period drama Viceroy's House. Butterfield has Tim Burton's (Alice In Wonderland) Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children out next year, with Tucci returning to The Hunger Games for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 which is out now. Clement, meanwhile, will be part of the cast for Steven Spielberg's (Lincoln) The BFG, which is set to arrive in UK cinemas on 22 July.
