Paul Feig reveals the new Ghostbusters' names

While many directors are content to hold back on the details of their movies before they hit the screen, some are more willing to share a few bits and pieces. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) is certainly taking the latter approach to his Ghostbusters reboot, responding to fans and tweeting imagery from the movie. In his latest tweet, he reveals the names of the main characters as played by Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (The Heat), Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live).

With the presence of set photos already on the web (including the official portrait of the main foursome below), speculation had naturally turned to their character names, so now we know that Wiig is playing Erin Gilbert, with McCarthy as Abby Yates, McKinnon as Jillian Holtzmann and Jones is Patty Tolan.

The basic story, written by the director and Katie Dippold (The Heat) finds Wiig and McCarthy as a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University. All is well, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton pack packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is on to play the assistant to the spirit chasing team, which will expand to include McKinnon and Jones. Recent additions to the cast also include Andy Garcia (Oceans 13), Matt Walsh (Ted), Michael K. Williams (12 Years A Slave) and Neil Casey (Saturday Night Live). Ghostbusters is set for release on July 22 next year.
