Marisa Tomei in talks to play Aunt May in new Spider-Man

News arrives via Variety that Marvel and Sony Pictures have zeroed in on Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) as their first choice to play Aunt May in the new Spider-Man reboot.

It is far from a done deal as yet – which might explain why there has been no big Marvel or Sony Pictures statement at the time we write this. But while it technically exists within a web of rumours, it feels fairly solid, and Tomei will likely be on set with Tom Holland (The Impossible) and director Jon Watts (Clown).

The next question, of course, is whether her introduction comes earlier than that – Holland's Spider-Man will make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War before he launches properly in a couple of years, and there is a slim chance that Tomei could show up there, though it's doubtful.

Marvel and Sony Pictures are still looking for the best writer – or writers – to bring the friendly neighbourhood web slinger back to our screens for his latest incarnation, but whatever happens, the first standalone Spider-Man film is scheduled for 28 July 2017.
