Idris Elba confirmed for Star Trek Beyond

There has been a lot of speculation and scuttlebutt surrounding Idris Elba's (Prometheus) involvement in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) sequel Star Trek Beyond – although, given that Simon Pegg has mentioned his name on more than one occasion, it was all but official – but we now have confirmation that Elba will be part of cast for the USS Enterprise's latest adventure. And who knew he could dance?

No, he's not playing an interstellar villain with a taste for throwing down epic dance battles. Though we would love to see that. In actual fact, it is all in service of several great causes, brought together through charity donation company Omaze, which you might recall from J.J. Abrams' (Star Trek Into Darkness) Star Wars: The Force Awakens competition to win a walk-on role.

That is the main prize on offer here also, including the chance to appear as a background member of the crew with other offers including tours of the set and the chance to watch filming.

Nothing has been announced about the plot for this new outing for the USS Enterprise, other than some vague talk of exploration and finally getting to see Chris Pine's Captain Kirk and crew head out into deep space to truly explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations, to boldly... Well, you know the rest.

Pine is back alongside Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Pegg (who co-wrote the film with Doug Jung) as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) is also aboard in some capacity.

With Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) busy directing the third Trek outing, Star Trek Beyond will warp into UK cinemas on 8 July next year.
