Catherine Hardwicke set for Stargirl

While it admittedly sounds like a science fiction drama, Stargirl in fact has a much more down to earth concept. Now news arrives via Variety that Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) is on board to call the shots.

The Departed (2006) producer Kristin Hahn has written the adaptation of Jerry Spinelli's book, which first hit shelves back in 2000 and won plenty of praise. It follows a home schooled teenage girl who has to enrol in an Arizona high school, and has a big impact on the facility's culture with her non-conformist ways.

It seems like a good fit for Hardwicke, who helped kick off the massive Twilight film franchise and has certainly shown a sensitivity towards offbeat teenage stories with the likes of Thirteen (2003). She most recently made the drama Miss You Already, which stars Drew Barrymore (Donnie Darko) and Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine) and will be out in the UK on 25 September. As for Stargirl, it should be before cameras this autumn, so expect a rash of casting stories in the coming months. As always, watch this space.
