Olivia Wilde set for TRON 3

It may or may not end up being named Ascension as our report last month mentioned, but we do at least know a few more solid details about the follow up to TRON: Legacy (2010). With Joseph Kosinski once again directing and Garrett Hedlund confirmed to play Sam Flynn, news now arrives via The Hollywood Reporter that Olivia Wilde will also be back as Quorra.

TRON: Legacy spoiler – Those who saw TRON: Legacy will know that the film ends with Sam escaping the Grid and bringing Quorra with him to the real world. From what Kosinski has said since, the new movie will deal with that situation and follow some other plot strands introduced, including the fact that Cillian Murphy made an appearance near the start as Edward Dillinger, also known as the son of Ed Dillinger, David Warner's villain from the original TRON (1982).

Whether he comes back or the character is re-cast might depend on scheduling, as it appears that Walt Disney Pictures want this one shooting later this year in Vancouver, probably eyeing either a late 2016 or early 2017 release (the effects load for this would probably dictate the latter), but we will see.

Hedlund was last seen in Unbroken (2014) and is part of the cast for Joe Wright's (Atonement) Pan (due 17 July) and William Monahan's (London Boulevard) Mojave, which has yet to receive a confirmed release date. He is also attached to appear in Ang Lee's (Life Of Pi) Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. As for Wilde, she recently worked on reanimation horror The Lazarus Effect, which has yet to arrive here, and has roles in Meadowland and Love The Coopers. She is also part of Martin Scorsese (The Wolf Of Wall Street) and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter's new, untitled music based drama for HBO.
