Demonstrating just how quickly Jason Blum's Blumhouse operation moves, we have our first trailer for The Gift, barely two months after most of the cast came aboard. Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses) and Rebecca Hall (The Prestige) star alongside Joel Edgerton, who is also the writer, director and producer.
Bateman and Hall play a married couple who decide to breathe some life into their stale relationship with a fresh start in a new town. But their move takes them into the orbit of Edgerton's Gordo, an apparent friend of Bateman's from the past whose arrival means unwelcome disruption. Perhaps not surprisingly the film's working title was Weirdo...
It's certainly a change of tone for the more usually comedic Bateman, and a continuation of Edgerton's recent form wearing multiple hats. He was a writer and producer on Felony (2013), and the excellent The Rover (2014) was also based on an Edgerton screenplay. The Gift marks his feature debut behind the camera after a couple of shorts.
Bateman and Hall will be contending with the schoolfriend from hell on 31 July in the States. There is no UK release date as yet, but it shouldn't be too far behind.
