New Fantastic Four cast featurettes arrive online

20th Century Fox have recently released a fresh series of featurettes which look at the casting of Marvel's famously dysfunctional hero family in Josh Trank's (Chronicle) Fantastic Four.

This latest incarnation of the Fantastic Four is a world away from the primary coloured, pop world of the previous movies, or the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby comic book that launched Marvel back in the early 1960s.

Instead, the template here seems to be the Ultimate Fantastic Four, with much younger versions of Reed Richards (Miles Teller), Sue Storm (Kate Mara), her adopted brother Johnny (Michael B. Jordan), and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell), an emphasis on hard science (the four intrepid explorers are not transformed into superheroes by heading into space, as per the original comic, but rather another dimension), and a muted, more realistic pallet. We'll also get to meet an antagonist, in the shape of programmer Victor Domashev/Doom, played by Toby Kebbell (War Horse).

Speaking to Empire magazine recently, Trank explained that the general tone of the film is that of a "dark Amblin movie". Writer/producer Simon Kinberg goes on to say that "there was an Amblin style approach to the characterisation, and to contextualising everything in a real world". In other words, don't expect any skintight blue Lycra on these heroes any time soon.

"There's the opportunity to make something that is challenging and tragic and dramatic," adds Trank. "The opportunity is right there in the material. We'd rather steer it in that direction as opposed to just embracing a tone that comes right off the page."

Fantastic Four hits cinemas on 6 August.
