Disney developing live action Pinocchio

Following in the footsteps of Alice In Wonderland (2010), Maleficent (2014), Kenneth Branagh's (Thor) recently released Cinderella and the currently filming Beauty And The Beast, Walt Disney Pictures have raided the archives for yet another animated classic to turn into a live action adventure. News arrives via Deadline that the Mouse House are set to develop Pinocchio.

Disney have hired The Odd Life Of Timothy Green (2012) writer/director Peter Hedges to craft a script that will once more follow the wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a real boy and sees his wish come before being led astray on numerous thrilling misadventures. All the while being unable to tell a lie lest his nose grow.

It's clearly very early days for the new film, which like the 1940 original will be drawn from Carlo Collodi's 1883 novel The Adventures Of Pinocchio. It joins fellow Disney conversion projects already in the works including Dumbo, The Jungle Book, Winnie The Pooh and Mulan.

This one, though, faces competition from Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim), who has been attempting to bring a darker take on the story to life for a few years, looking to work on the film with Gris Grimly and Matthew Robbins (Mimic). That one is still in development, but has a completed script and del Toro has commissioned imagery for it. As always, watch this space.
