Three new viral shorts for Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes arrive online

20th Century Fox have just released an astonishing series of viral shorts for Matt Reeves' (Let Me In) simian sequel Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.

With Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes picking up ten years after the events of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011), you might be curious as to what exactly has occurred in the intervening period. These brilliantly executed viral shorts show exactly that. And, from humanity's point of view, it's not too pretty.

Motherboard, Vice Magazines science and technology channel, is behind these latest virals that offer a glimpse into the decade that has elapsed.

This first is Spread Of Simian Flu (Year 1). Amidst a widespread viral outbreak known as the 'Simian Flu', a mother is quarantined after testing positive for the virus, leaving her husband and daughter to fend for themselves.

In Struggling To Survive (Year 5), the intervening period has brought the spread of the Simian Flu. First isolated cases, then an epidemic and finally a full-blown pandemic has devastated the human population and brought anarchy and despair. Looting is everywhere and the penalty for just about any crime is death.

Arguably the standout, Story Of The Gun (Year 10), boasts obvious echoes of Winchester '73 (1950) in charting the breakdown of law and order in society as a shotgun passes from one pair of ill-fated hands to another.

Dawn finds Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his hairy cohorts have holed up in Ape City, distant from human survivors, and are trying to establish a new community for themselves.

But then they encounter a group of humans, including Man-of-the-moment Jason Clarke's (Public Enemies) Malcolm and Keri Russell's (Dark Skies) Ellie, and the touch paper is lit for a potential conflict. Tensions aren't helped by Gary Oldman's (Dark Knight Rises) Dreyfuss, a staunch advocate for human survival who is none too pleased about peace overtures to the simians. Tempers flare on both sides as Caesar attempts to keep the peace, still connected to the human race thanks to the kindness he was shown when he was young.

With Toby Kebbell (War Horse), Judy Greer (The Descendants) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road), Kirk Acevedo (Invincible), Kevin Rankin (Dallas Buyers Club) and ape movement coach Terry Notary (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) rounding out the cast, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes will be out on 17 July in the UK, following a 11 July debut in the US.
