New clips for Luc Besson's Lucy arrive online

Universal Pictures have just released a series of clips from Luc Besson's (Léon) science fiction thriller Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers) as a drug mule with superhuman powers.

After a chapter of his career in which Luc Besson made political biopics and comic-strip movies, both with an oddly old fashioned feel, The Fifth Element (1997) man is going back to the future with Lucy, which promises to match muscle and mind with the action style his fans know and love him for.

Johansson plays the titular young woman living in a futuristic Asian city. Kidnapped one night, she's knocked out and wakes up to find drug packages surgically sewn into her stomach. When one of the packs accidentally leaks into her blood stream, it fires up unused portions of her brain, giving her strength, speed, knowledge and abilities beyond those of normal humans.

Soon, she finds herself on a mission to track down and stop the people responsible for her situation, with some help from Morgan Freeman's (Dark Knight Rises) professor, who knows a thing or two about the workings of the human mind.

"She understood the story and was very excited by it," Besson explains of his lead. "She's the kind of actress who wants to have the challenge. When she does (Broadway play) Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, it's challenging for an actress: you have to work the accent... but she loved that, she's a hard worker. I met a couple of actresses who want to be stars so much that they don't want to take any risks, they want to play the easy thing. They say, 'Oh yes, I would love to do the film!' but you can tell that they won't survive."

While the general concept seems to be yet another excuse for Besson to throw high concept action on the screen, there's definitely a lot of promise here.

Lucy hits US screens on 8 August before heading to the UK on 22 August.
