After a successful run of festival screenings at the likes of Toronto, Australian crime drama Felony is finally preparing to hit cinemas.
Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty) plays Malcolm 'Mal' Toohey, a celebrated narcotics detective recently injured in the line of duty, but still plugging away. When he drives sleepily one night, he accidentally knocks a boy from his bike. But when he reports the incident to the police, he leaves out the crucial detail that he was the driver responsible, worried what it might do to his career.
Then things get murkier when two detectives – Carl Summer (Tom Wilkinson) and Jim Melic (Jai Courtney) – show up to investigate the accident and soon start to twig that Mal isn't exactly telling them everything. Carl is of the old school opinion that a good cop like Mal shouldn't have his reputation sullied by something like this, whereas Jim is determined to go by the book.
As the boy's condition worsens, Mal is tormented by his conscience, affecting his family, including wife Julie (Melissa George). With Edgerton also writing the script, Felony is so far set for Australian release on 28 August, but we'll have to wait and see if it scores a UK date. Given the cast, we're pretty confident.
