Of course the article carries no official accompaniment from rights holders Warner Bros, and the idea that Donner is trying to make a new Goonies isn't exactly new. Members of the cast have talked it up in the past, and back in 2009 when Empire reunited the actors, Donner and producer Steven Spielberg for their 20th birthday issue, Donner even said there was no hope of it happening despite years of attempts.
So something appears to have changed his mind. Obviously, studios have been raiding their back catalogues to find titles that could fuel remakes and reboots, so we'd put money on development happening on something to do with The Goonies (1985).
Whether that means we'll see the surviving members of the original cast, which included Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Ke Quan, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and John Matsuzak, back on screen or whether we'll have to meet some new Goonies is anyone's guess.
Right now, we'd caution everyone to hold off on their excitement until this either becomes more than just a ping on the rumour sonar, or actually becomes something real.
