Mark Rylance heads Through The Looking Glass

Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter are all already confirmed to return for Walt Disney Pictures' sequel to Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland (2010). Now the rest of the Through The Looking Glass cast is filling out, with word coming in that Mark Rylance will make an appearance.

James Bobin (The Muppets) is the director this time, and Variety seem confident that Rylance will be playing the father of Depp's Mad Hatter. Rylance is, for the record, only three years older than Depp.

Since no such character appears in Lewis Carroll's book, we can safely assume that Bobin's film will play as fast and loose with source as Burton's outing. The first film was a peculiar mash-up of elements from both Alice books and original sequel elements. Where Through The Looking Glass will take us is currently anyone's guess.

Rylance is busiest as a theatre actor, but showed up in The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) and Anonymous (2011). It's not all period drama though, he was also in Blitz (2011) with Jason Statham, and has a role in Taken (2008) director Pierre Morel's forthcoming The Gunman.

Through The Looking Glass is produced, as was Alice, by Joe Roth, with a screenplay once again by Linda Wolverton (who also wrote the forthcoming Maleficent). Disney hope to have production underway in the summer.
