First trailer for Lucy lands online

Universal Pictures have released their first trailer for Luc Besson's (Léon) science fiction thriller Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers) as a drug mule with superhuman powers.

Johansson plays the titular young woman living in a futuristic Asian city. Kidnapped one night, she's knocked out and wakes up to find drug packages surgically sewn into her stomach. When one of the packs accidentally leaks into her blood stream, it fires up unused portions of her brain, giving her strength, speed, knowledge and abilities beyond those of normal humans.

Soon, she finds herself on a mission to track down and stop the people responsible for her situation, with some help from Morgan Freeman's (Dark Knight Rises) professor, who knows a thing or two about the workings of the human mind.

The trailer premiered at Universal's CinemaCon presentation earlier this month to a rapturous reception, and while it does seem to be another excuse for Besson to throw high concept action on the screen, there's definitely a lot of promise here.

Lucy hits US screens on 8 August before heading to the UK on 22 August.
